I will make a promise to you all. And we all know a promise can be difficult to keep. But I do confidently promise, if you venture into West Footscray, in Melbourne’s inner west, and visit Post Industrial Design on Barkly St., that you will be in love. I cannot tell you exactly what will capture your eye (and thus your heart) but some item in Mary’s shop will beguile and seduce you. That is my promise.
I have loved Post Industrial Design ever since its doors opened three years ago. Jewelry, home-wares, curios… or maybe it is just the wonderful Mary Long. Here she is, pictured below.
Mary commissioned her husband, Jos, to create this years Christmas window, which is a “moving wonderland, an artistic impression of the Melbourne’s cityscape viewed from Melbourne’s West. Made entirely from up-cycled materials, local sculptor, Jos Van Hulsen wanted to create a world that brought wonder and magic back to Christmas. “As an artist you cannot ask for much more than watching a sea of children, hands pressed to the
glass, mesmerized,” said Van Hulsen. “It beats any exhibition I have ever had! Just to see people so engaged and fascinated gives me such a thrill. This is what I aspire to when developing a work.”” The photograph of Jos below is by Aaron Maguire.
Mary supports many local makers and social enterprises. She stocks Greeves St. products, such as our Christmas decorations, and my own Andie scarves, pictured below.
Cool shop, cool vibe and cool people. Get down here if you want the people you love to love their Christmas gifts this year!
